Lowen's Natural Skincare

About the Company
Lowen's Natural Skincare is a Canadian, family-owned brand based in Calgary, Alberta. I particularly fell in love with these products after reading the story behind them, and how they now help many individuals to this day. It all started with a pharmacist and his daughter, Lowen, who unfortunately developed chronic diaper rash. His experience and knowledge allowed him to begin trial and error experiments, in hopes to find a cure for her. Throughout the experiments and his "failure" to create the perfect diaper balm, he began to accidentally create other amazing products, such as their lip balm.

Product Breakdown & Review
Butter Balm- $20.00
Free of: petrochemicals, artificial preservatives, colourants, and scenting agents.
Ingredients: Certified Organic, Non-GMO Canola Oil, Fair Trade Extra Virgin Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Unrefined Beeswax, Cold Pressed Camelina Sativa Seed Oil, Cold Pressed Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Virgin Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Wax, Zinc Oxide.
This is actually the product that kickstarted the entire company. The purpose of this balm is to work as an effective barrier to irritants, which is exactly what it does. As stated previously, this company was created by a veteran pharmacist in search of a solution for his daughter's chronic diaper rash. Although this product was originally intended for an infant, it also works as an amazing skin conditioner for cracked skin, chafing, rashes, and tattoos. My regular workplace involves highly acidic conditions, and my skin becomes very irritated due to that. This balm is the only thing that I've found effective in not only acting as a barrier for the acid, but for providing relief when the acid irritates my skin.
Lowen's Natural Skincare never tests on animals, but this balm has also found to be effective when used on your pet's paws. This balm can be applied as many times a day as necessary, but it's best used right before bed to allow your skin to heal overnight.
About the Ingredients
You'll notice that in the ingredients listed above, "cold pressed" is used to describe some of the oils. This essentially means that when the oil is being made, it is extracted at room temperature when the acid value is relatively low, therefore the oil products are acquired after precipitation and filtration. This means that there is no need for any refinement, which allows the oil to retain the flavour, aroma and nutritional value. Due to this fact, this oil is considered to be top notch for skin care requirements and cooking!
You will also notice the word "fair trade," when reading through the ingredients. This takes us back to above where I listed the company's core values, specifically "advocacy" and "relationships."
Some may ask,"why is this important?"
Fair trade ensures fair prices and benefits for farmers, workers and their families in developing countries. Unfortunately, there are many companies who do not associate themselves with fair trade. This allows for inhumane working conditions, which inevitably affects education, health care and environmental sustainability for the people in developing countries. This is why it is so important to support companies who have genuine values, and include positive mission statements such as Lowen's Natural Skincare.
Bubble Paste- $30.00
"Simple Vegan Foaming Madness"
Ingredients: Glycerin (vegetable source), Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (organic salt foaming agent), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Blood Orange) Essential Oil
This 3 ingredient, kid-approved product is no ordinary bubble paste. Normally, I'd take one look at this and decide that a bubble bath isn't worth $30.00. After reading further into this, I realized that I was completely wrong! First of all, it only takes 1 Tbsp of this stuff to have the best bubble bath of your life. Therefore, it would definitely last you quite a while and save you many trips to the store. Second of all, I didn't realize how many added chemicals were in the typical bubble bath products at Drug Stores or Walmart. Let's take the famous "Johnston's Baby Bath"product for example.
One ingredient listed is "Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB)." This is commonly used in many personal care and household cleaning products. Some people have an allergic reaction when using this, and it was actually labelled as "Allergen of the Year" in 2004 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society. Since then, they have discovered that it wasn't the CAPB itself causing an allergic reaction, but two impurities that are produced in the manufacturing process. Regardless, it's clearly not a very natural process if it allows for irritants such as this.
Another ingredient used in Johnston's Baby Bath product is "Polysorbate 20." Polysorbate starts out as harmless sorbitol, but then it's treated with 20 "parts" of ethylene oxide. According to some, it's deemed"harmless," yet it's not natural. There are cases where it could potentially be contaminated with ethylene oxide, 1,4 dioxane, or laced with heavy metals. Although it has been assessed at "low risk," why risk it at all? There is no need for natural ingredients to be replaced by unnatural ones, yet there are many companies that continue to do so!
BB Cream- $40.00
Ingredients: Aqua, Cetyl Alcohol, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Zinc Oxide (nano), Glycerin, Canola Oil, Camelina Sativa Seed Oil, Polysorbate 80, Lecithin, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Butter, Panthenol, Niacinamide, Thiotic Acid, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol, Xanthan Gum, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Rosemary Officinalis Leaf Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hyaluronic Acid.
This product contains omega fatty acids, Vitamin B3, Thioctic acid, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic acid, and Zinc Oxide.
What does that mean? Let's do a quick product breakdown!
The Omega fatty acids consist of unrefined camelina and non-GMO canola oil. As stated previously, the words "unrefined" and "non-GMO" are used to describe how it was made, and that they are more pure and held to a higher value. These oils help improve hydration, smoothness, and redness. In some cases, they have shown to improve hyperpigmentation and work as an anti-inflammatory.
Vitamin B3 has been shown to help reduce signs of aging, hyperpigmented skin and sun damage.
Thioctic acid is an antioxidant that helps the skin fight oxidative damage, which means the damage created from free radicals. Free radicals can be made through harmful environmental conditions, such as pollution or the sun. Vitamin E works the same way in terms of preventing oxidative damage.
Hyaluronic acid is a powerful skin hydrating ingredient that helps assist in surface tissue repair. Don't always be intimidated by the word "acid" when dealing with personal skincare products. A simple google search will tell you all you need to know!
Overall, this product is amazing and I love using it as a makeup primer. You can apply this morning and night as a skin moisturizer as well. It is all natural, unscented, paraben free, hypoallergenic and it won't clog pores!
Lip Balm- $6.00
Cool Mint Mojito ingredients: Beeswax, Cetyl Alcohol, Menthol, Certified Organic Cold pressed Non-GMO Canola Oil, Rosemary Oil, Safflower Oleosomes (Hydresia), Vegetable Glycerin, Vegetable Hyaluronic Acid, Certified Organic Fair Trade Shea Butter, Rum, Mint Essential Oil, Lime Essential Oil.
Lime in 'da Coconut ingredients: Bee’s Wax, Coconut Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Oleosomes, Glycerin, Butyrosperimum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Menthol, Rosmarinus officinalis, (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Hyaluronic Acid.
Both of these lip balms are amazing, but I personally favour the "Cool Mint Mojito" flavour. It was humorously described as "taking your lips on vacation" on the website, but that statement is absolutely correct!
In conclusion, I highly recommend this company if you love all natural, long-lasting, safe and effective products. As per their mission statement, "If you're not making things better, what's the point?"
